Our mission is to partake in sharing God’s love as a church with the Brazilian people, particularly with the children at Casa da Graça, a temporary shelter for local girls from underprivileged families. We are committed to building long-term relationships with the local community and bringing the Gospel by serving and sharing Christ’s love with those in need. We look to be involved in each girl’s life and their family in the long run.
We believe God can use us to plant His seeds in the girls’ hearts to provide them with a vision and also serve as an encouragement to them as they grow up to find suitable places in their society, always remembering their true identity as God’s precious daughters. As we serve in this purpose, we shall look to find them love, self awareness, faith, vision and the ability to further God’s kingdom on earth.
About Brazil
- Brazil is the largest country in South America and 5th largest country in the world.
- The official language is Portuguese.
- The population is mostly Roman Catholic consisting of 73.6 percent of the total population, followed by Protestants with 15.4 percent.
- Brazil has the largest growing economy in Latin America and has been experiencing a rapid economic growth in the recent years. However, the country still struggles with 30 percent of the population living under the poverty line and has not been able to overcome the large economic disparity between the rich and the poor. According to a study conducted by the World Bank, the richest 20 percent of the population make as much as 30 times more than the poorest 20 percent.
- São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and is the capital of the state of São Paulo. It is also the most populous state in the country.
Casa da Graça
ACC has committed to serving the children of a temporary shelter for girls called Casa da Graça (Grace House) located in the city of Itapevi, about 25 miles west of the city of Sao Paulo. The shelter was founded in September of 2008 by Korean missionaries and currently houses girls (age 3-12) from the local favelas (slums) or the streets.
The girls at Casa da Graça are placed there by a local judge when children have been abandoned, neglected, and/or abused by their parents or guardians. Some of their parents are unable to provide adequate living condition for their children due to extreme poverty and others have escaped from street life. Even when a girl is fortunate enough to return to her home, there is very little social assistance available to her family which deems to be the biggest challenge.
Outreach Opportunities
There are two types of serving opportunities available in Brazil:
- Short term winter missions (scheduled to occur every January) – ideal for both students and young professionals.
- Long term summer missions – ideal for college students and above looking to serve during their summer vacation.
Anyone serving in Brazil can expect to assist with the construction and development of new houses for the girls, build relationship with the local community (missionaries, social workers, girls and their families) and to raise funds for a van which will serve as means of transportation for the girls.
January 2012 Mission Trip
- Date: Jan 5, 2012 - Jan 16, 2012 (subject to slight modification per team members' availability)
- Application deadline: July 31, 2011
Donation & Support
- In January of 2011 ACC has donated over $10,000 to Casa da Graça and has started them a “Van Fund”, an initiative to purchase a van which will serve as main form of transportation for the girls as well as transporting food and supplies for the shelter. We are prayerfully continuing to raise funds until the shelter is able to purchase a van.
